Magnetic energy is invisible, and high-density energy is almost completely undetectable, so symbolism reaches for familiar things that flow. Water poured out flows downward, fire is an upward flow, and wind flows in whatever direction the artist wants. Smoke marks an upward flow too, lightning goes in any direction, and weapons such as arrows and swords must move to be effective. Flow symbols are direction labels for the energy an image describes (per Dr. Halls). A downward flow, an upward flow, or a sideways flow each marks the matching direction of energy around the torus. Even a weapon looks static until it moves, which is why arrows and swords are flow symbols as well.
